Timed Analysis

0:00-0:13 A zoom out is used here to grasp the establishing shot to gage the setting of the music video. From this one shot we can see that the video is set in a house, and we can see that it is night time, this sets the theme for the rest of the video.

0:13-0:17 An over the shoulder shot of one of the characters stumbling through the hallway is used. This again reinforces the audience of the setting of the video, it also introduces a new character.

0:17-0:23 Close ups of alcohol bottle in the characters hand tells us a bit more about the character, this is supported by close ups of the characters legs being unbalanced. The camera seems so be stumbling along with the character, this emphasises the idea that this character is under the influence of alcohol.

0:23-0:27 A contrast in themes of the music video is shown with a mid close up shot of the singer lip syncing to the song whilst wearing wings and standing in front of a white back drop. This contrasts with themes we saw before hand which were much darker and almost cynical. This could however represent death, as the mis-en-scene involves angel wings.

0:27-0:34 A close up of the character pouring alcohol into a 'Sippy Cup' this brings in elements of the song title.

0:34-0:35 In this jump cut we see the main characters eyes open in an extreme close up shot, this triggers the events that are too follow, almost like the calm before the storm.

0:35-0:49 The camera changes from a side angle mid shot to a birds eye view shot of the mother on the floor in the kitchen. This time its this character that lip syncs, as though the child is narrating the goings on in the house.

0:49-0:55 wide angle, close up, wide angle sequence of the child in bed. This enables the audience to see the overall goings on in the room but also the feelings and emotions on the child's face.

0:55-1:03 The narrative storyline is again interrupted to show the singer, who plays the daughter, lip syncing to the music. This part is slightly different to the first lip syncing section as it uses smoke and she seems to crawl towards the camera, giving it an eerie feel.

1:03-1:19 During these few second there are multiple different shots that take place. First we are introduced to new characters as they walk through the hallway. We then have a low angle shot of the pairs shoes and legs as we see them interact with the character of the mother. we also have shots of the singer lip syncing again, this time with a teddy bear in shot, reflecting the innocence and age of the child.

1:19-1:47 This section is again a number of different shots compiled into a short amount of time. In the fight scene there are lots of close ups and blurring within the editing of the scene, this emphasises the aggression towards the characters. There is a pan up used to reveal the mother holding a knife this foreshadows the pan up that occurs after the mother has, as suspected, killed the two new characters. Along with the lyrics of the song we can assume that the person killed was her husband.

1:47-2:00 This section of the video is the singer, again in the angel wings, lip syncing to the song. The use of mis-en-scene with the lipstick reflects the lyrics being sung "all the makeup in the world wont make you less insecure"

2:00-2:14 A pan across is used to reveal the bodies laying on the floor, even though we never saw the incident happen, from the last two scenes we can make an assumption of what has happened.

2:14-2:30 A shot reverse shot is used to see the child emerge from her bedroom and walk into the kitchen, the use of this shot reverse shot enables us to see the mum sneak up behind her with the knife in her hand, making the audience anticipate what will happen next.

2:30-2:50 Lots of jump cuts together make up the next 20 seconds of the video whilst we see the reaction of the daughter after finding the bodies in the kitchen.

2:50-3:00 This next section uses a different camera style where the camera seems to move with the characters, this could support my idea that it is the child that is narrating the whole video. There is then repetition to the close up of the daughter opening her eyes which we saw earlier in the video. This may make the audience question what has just happened and through the use of the zoom out and pan, questions are answered.

3:00-3:21 As the music video draws to a close we see final shots of all of the characters within the video, including the mother, child and the singer lip syncing. Although it is not confirmed there is an assumption that the child dies, this is because in the clips with the singer she seems to become run down.



0:00-0:04 Camera pans down the side of troye sivans face, as the title of the song fades into shot in the same font as his album cover. The coloration of the background shows pale purple, pink and blue lights, perhaps used to reflect the fun side of youth.

0:04-0:08 The scene cuts to the singer lip syncing to the camera which is zooming from a wide shot to a mid shot. The mis-en-scene in this clip shows cups and bottles of alcohol, from this we can assume that the video is set at a party.

0:08-0:14 The camera continues to zoom into the singer as the camera angle goes from a mid shot to a close mid shot. There is then a jump cut that returns us back to the same side profile of troye sivan that we saw at the beginning of the video, this time a wide shot is used.

0:14-0:17 An over the shoulder shot is used to watch the singer, who is still lip syncing, walk through a house, the background is blurred our but glimpses of other people can be seen. At the end of this clip the light is overexposed as if the flash. The flash leads to a jump cut of a wide angle shot which is now of Troye stood at the end of a corridor which is surrounded by fairy lights.

0:17-0:20 The camera zooms into troy sivan through the corridor as a white light shines behind him.

0:20- 0:25- A jump cut to a high angle clip of the singer lip syncing into the camera which ends in a jump cut to a mid shot of the singer back in the corridor.

0:25-0:32- The camera zooms out of the singer, who is lip syncing into the camera, as he walks through the corridor.

0:25-0:35- The bright pastel lights shine through a window during a pan from right to left, we can see the outline of the singer which comes into focus as he moves further into the camera.

0:35-0:40- Jump shot back into the corridor, the camera zooms out to show a wide shot. As the chorus starts, the fairy lights in the hallway turn off.

0:40-0:43- A close up of troy sivan lip syncing into the camera. The pastel coloured lights can still be seen.

0:43-0:49- A jump cut shows a different scene, a party. A dolly track is used to zoom into troy who is sat on the kitchen side. The camera zooms through numerous people dancing. The colorisation has turned from pastel colours to a more blue/green colour. The dancers seem to be slow motion whilst troy is normal speed.

0:49-0:52 These few seconds consist of numerous jump cuts which shows different characters within the video. The first of which is an over the shoulder shot of one girl laughing with another. We then see another over the should shot with an implication of two people about to kiss. The third jump cut shows the singer helping out a drunken friend, this effect is pulled off by the camera being slightly wonky and off centre. The final jump cut shows a group of boys laughing and having fun, this has the feel of being slightly off centre, this will make audiences feel as though they are actually stood their involved and watching.

0:52-0:59 This again is another section of jump cuts. The first of which is a mid shot of troye singing to the camera, the next is a silhouette of a couple in the corridor. The silhouette contrasts with the pastel lights in the background. The next shot involves a silhouette again, this time the pastel lights are so over exposed that it is the main focus. Another jump cut shows the singer, an implication is made that he is about to kiss his friend. The jump cut compilation ends with the singer sitting back down on the sofa which he has been on when lip syncing, this time the wide shot shows him surrounded by friends.

0:59-1:01 A wide angle shot shows blue balloons floating around the ceiling.

1:01-1:04 Jump cuts show people at the party. The now dark lights and clips of people sat around imply that it is later at night.

1:04-1:09 Jump cut again to show the singer dancing in the corridor, a wide angle shot is used. The next jump cut shows the pastel lights appear again with silhouettes of people dancing in front of them.

1:09-1:18 This section begins with a birds eye view of troye lying on a number of teddies. The camera then seems to be handhold as it travels through a fort that the friends have made. The camera zooms in and out between different people. A jump cut in between shows the blue balloons and the party still going on. This may be implying that the friends are almost in their own world.

1:18-1:41 This whole section is a mirror of previous parts of the music video. It involves the silhouettes in front of the pastel lights, the over the shoulder shot of the singer walking through the house and numerous shots of troye lip-syncing through the corridor.

1:41-1:46- A wide angle shot shows the party in full swing, with his friends dancing around him whilst he sings to the camera. The birds eye view shot is seen again with troye still lip syncing to the camera.

1:46-1:47 This jump shot shows a wide angle of two people stood opposite each other. There is an implication made that they are giving each other piercings as the camera zooms into one of the characters to show a needle placed above her tongue/

1:47-1:49 Birds eye view shot of teen in bath

1:49-1:52 Over the shoulder shot and then jump cut back to a birds eye view shot.

1:52- 2:01 This section features lots of light, with jump cuts focusing on close ups of light up shoes and people playing with different types of light or stood in front of lights to crewe silhouettes.

2:01- 3:06 The light is flashed to jump cut to troye lip syncing in the corridor again. The next minute of this video revisits different sections we have previously seen. It focuses on different people within the party, showing by the use of close ups how they interact with others. We also see use of birds eye view, over the shoulder and the same pastel colourisation. This section seems to answer any questions we previously had as it shows couples who we saw almost kiss, finally get together.

3:06-3:18 The end of the music video shows the non-digetic music cut off as the screen blurs and fades to black. As the screen fades the bright pastel lights still shine.


0:00-0:02 Wide angle shot to show four men (the band) with cups in their hand, insinuating alcohol consumption.

0:02-0:04 Jump cuts to reveal different companies logos whilst in the background showing hints to the establishing shot of the setting.

0:04-0:06 Performance feature of the band being in the video, singing their song.

0:06-0:09 Another section of jump cuts which cut away in time with the guitar strums. The final jump cut revels the band name in front of a croup of people, all holding drinks.

0:09-0:12 The title of the song, in the same font as their album cover, appears in front of a low angle show of the singers feet surrounded by leads and chords.

0:12-0:14 Mid close up of an arm reaching for a cup seems to start the music video off, editing techniques flicker on the screen to transition into the next shot, this is accompanied by the drum solo.

0:14-0:19 Pan around of a group of people that seem to be on a roof, drinking and hanging around in groups. Mid shot of two men sat laughing, their costumes match the indie feel of the song. A close up is used to shoot the alcohol, the image fades in from a blur.

0:19-0:23 Shot reverse shot to show the man playing beer pong. It first shows him throwing the ball and then where the ball lands.

0:23-0:26 Another editing feature, similar to that of a video reel. Close up of one of the cast jumps to the same man, this time in a mid shot and smoking a cigarette.

0:26-0:28 Wide angle shot to show lots of different characters. Then a jump cut to a close up of a women.

0:28-0:33 This section of the music video starts off with jump cuts showing the band performing the song. Close ups of the band members body parts along side different musical instruments are shown.

0:33-0:49 A wide angle shot is now used to show the band performing with the audience in the back ground. The camera techniques used have the same format as what we may see with a handheld camera, this may have been used to give the affect that the audience are there watching the performance first hand.

0:49-0:54 Wide angle shot of a group of friends, into a mid close up shot focusing on one of the friends.

0:54-1:09 This section of the video uses cuts dependant on the beats within the song. For example, the first section is almost slow motion with longer cuts, these then go into jump cuts as the music speeds up. The cuts reveal different people within the party, mostly drinking, smoking, dancing and laughing.

1:09-1:14 High angle shot of the band member playing the drums, with the use of the video real editing which we saw previously, this shot moves into the image of the audience dancing to the song.

1:14-1:16 Mid close up of a man wearing a mask which has the bands name written on it.

1:16-1:19 Slow mo footage of people at the party, laughing and smoking with the use of high angle shots.

1:19-1:24 Shots of the band performing are interrupted by cuts of people drinking.

1:37- 1:42 As the songs pace changes the images we see change too, low angle shots of people with baseball bats and girls wearing rabbit heads represents some sort of power that they have over the audience.

2:18-2:20 As the song becomes more upbeat the slow motion is stopped and the camera zooms in to close ups of the characters. This is then followed by two jump cuts showing close ups of different peoples faces.

2:20-2:27 Close ups and hand cam shots of the band performing is segregated by clips of individuals faces.

2:27- 2:33 Slow motion wide angle shot of a man smashing the beer pong with a baseball bat is interrupted by snippets of the band performing.

2:33- 2:42 This section is full of jump cuts which cut along time with the strum of the guitar. The jump cuts reveal slow motion footage of people at the party.

2:42-2:46 The song ends as the band stop performing, wide angle shot is used to show the reaction from the crowd.

2:46-2:51 Mid close up shots show the crowd cheering, although this can not be heard. Again the footage is in slow motion.

2:51-2:55 A wide angle shot of the lead singer sat on his own then jumps to a mid close up of him surrounded by people.

2:55-2:56 A wide angle shot showing just one single cup spilt on the floor.

2:56-3:02 There is then a close up of the lead singers face and then the screen turns black.
